95 Saturn SL1 (1.9 sohc) Pulled the alternator and had tested at local shop, passed check. Car is running on just the battery and drains it. If I disconect the battery the car dies instantly. Am I missing something simple here?

Not positive on your model, but some have a fuse that allows voltage to the alternator. Have you checked all fuses in the car? Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Yes you are missing something simple.... a volt/amp meter......that is how you check for charging voltage, alt supply voltage & parasitic draws...or $40 for a shop to diag the prob versus $600 to replaced the ECM you spiked due to removing a battery cable while the engine is running & getting a voltage surge.....

Note to "guest #2" : It's not the policy of the site to bash or belittle anyone. Annon posting is allowed on this forum and we can't control what a stranger may say. If bad enough we can remove it. Mr. way2old is one of our own and made a suggestion to start with which was a competant suggestion. I can only add that some voltage is needed to an alternator to enable it to work in most set ups. Glad you found what was wrong with your car with this. Finding wiring installed wrong would not be the automatic first suspicion of the problem by me anyway. Enjoy the site. It's not a mean place at all, Tom

First, Thanks Tom! Second, thanks to all that make this a great source of information. I guess the old fashoned way of looking at a like car was needed in this case. I too wouldn't have suspected wrongly wired to be the initial issue. I should note though, in hindsight, that I should have been more suspicious as I bought it with a brand new battery in it. Then upon finding the replaced starter was held in loosly by one bolt with the other bolt in thrown in the trunk I knew a little more about the previous "gentleman" who worked on it. I'm sure the sellers knew about the lack of charging issue and just 'forgot' to tell me about it. Anyway, problem solved. Lets pull together and tackle the next guys problems. Have a great day all.
