new belt to by pass air compressor 1993 buick Sign In

I have a 1993 buick regal 3.8L v6. I would like to know if there is a rib belt i can use that will by pass the air condition compressor, as the bearings went out and is making a loud scraping noise. I don't want to replace the compressor (1200.00+), as the car is just a comuter now. The part houses are no help!

Thanks Mike

I don’t think a different/shorter belt will work for you; the belt will hit or rub against a bracket, brace or the engine itself causing the belt to fail. There is a company that makes replacement pulleys that take the place of the AC compressors. I’ve used them a few times now and haven’t had any trouble with the installation; you would remove the compressor and then bolt this in its place. Using the bolts that held the compressor; the pulley is also sized that you still use the original belt.
Here’s a link to the part you need.

I think both Dan and I live where a lot of folks just won't spend big bucks on A/C for an older car especially. What I've done here for the problem you have is just replace the clutch from a dead compressor and a lot of shops take a good clutch off before they turn in a core for rebuilding just for that. Bearing alone can be replaced but I believe it's dimpled in and that scares me!! If just a snap ring not so bad but you will need a puller either way. If A/C is down unplug the compressor and tie the plug safely away.

My favorite belt right now is Gates Gatorback, but I've seen other brands making belts to be quiet too but haven't tried them yet. Some belts require removing a motor mount to replace and most don't in my experience.

Thanks Dan for that site. I didn't know anyone was making by-pass pulleys as I never did it that way but it's good to know, T
