Hey Tom, a costomer whats to me to fix his 4barrel to only operate as a 2barrel so his 84 ford club-wagon won't use so much gas,I told him about the power being affected,but will it damage the trans? I need some clue from you and the guys BTW I'm trying to locate a steering column for a 72 mark 4 any ideas? thanks.

you could probably just disconnect the linkage for the secondaries. the trans will probably be constantly be hunting for the proper gear thus increasing wear and tear. when you floor the gas pedal the kickdown linkage and the secondary linkage will be in unison. if the linkage kicks down and the engine isnt getting the power you will bogging all over the place.
i wouldnt recommend doing it, instead he would be better off getting a 2 barrel carb for his application.
i think if anything he will get worse fuel mileage because the engine wont be running as well and he will prob have his foot on the pedal more to make up for the difference

Hi dave,
I don't think changing or deleting the back barrels will help fuel econ - just drive such that they don't come on would be my suggestion for that.
Steering column: 72 Mark..... should be same as the T-bird of the era. Tilt was on directional and the similar looking ones might not have that so watch if the person must have that. I don't think tilt was standard on even the Lincoln but night have been for the mark.
How much of the column do you need? If a resto the color can be matched perfectly with vinyl dye - black is over-the counter at Napa and other places.

Thanks I really don't like rigging things, this guy lives in the capital, and you don't pull slowly into traffic there unless you have a death wish. And the person wanting the steering column didnt say if tilt,. thanks Tom I'm calling him back to check. will post back.

Hi Tom, about the steering column I was wrong on the year,its a 73 and is tilt, I would need the entire assembly,but the problem is locating one, I have a friend that deals with a company out of Florida for such parts, no luck there. Would you know of any websites/companies that might have/locate it? The salvage yards here are dry.Any ideas where to look would be appreciated

http://www.bakersauto.com/ Dave - I restored a 69 and 79 local parts and the tough ones came from this place. They'll have what you want in the right color most likely!
Place was started by Ron Baker who has since retired and turned this biz over to Steve Ouellette (pronounce "wool") and they know there stuff from 1961 up and have the world's largest inventory. Their warehouse (several) in just Putnam, CT was as big as an airline hangar with used parts in order and most now inventoried. Free tech assistance and toll free ordering. They aren't free but it ends the problem with one call.
The 69 I did up I wanted new not used or repro Lincoln starts and appliques and got them out of dusty old "FoMoCo" baggies!!!!
The Marks are worth bucks as are the 4dr converts from the 60s.
1972 and 1973 are about the same except for the 1973 mandated 5mph bumpers and the HP was at the turning point of the detuning of the 460 which made them pigs, 1/2 the HP, but a tad better emissions.
The full size Lincolns went to chassis in 1968 for the Mark and 1970 for the Cont/Town Car - then TC was a trim package not the body type. The chassis on yours lasted in both the T-Bird and Mark till 1976 - I think.
And LTD could have the identical steering column also as I owned a 77 LTD with tilt and cruise on wheel. That was standard I think on the Marks.
If this is a job that needs perfection let me know and I'll go and look at a part myself - it's just an hour away from me. I haven't seen Steve there in quite a while now but I would ask for him.
You'll do infinately better on price by just checking out a pick your own bone yard near you. I think this whole column just drops down on the seat or floor if seat out and a few hook ups - shaft might come out completely from underhood at rubber thing - not sure.
What was/is the problem with the one there now that a whole one is needed?

Just fun with Lincolns: They are just Ford's but........... they are made at a separate plant in Wixom, MI and the quality is more consistant with the old ones when all from the same place. They are the flagship of Ford aways behind Cadillac till the change of 1961.
Trivia: The first Town Car by body name was model year 1980 known as the Panther Platform. Panthers were the hood ornaments on very early Lincolns! Lincoln was acquired by Edsel Ford in the 50s (guess) at the nagging at Henry Ford himself

Tom, thanks for that site,just what I been looking for Tell you the truth I don't have the vehicle here yet so I can't say what was wrong with the original steering column. I been trying to contact the person to get some more info on the problem, but I will see his son tomorrow,they'er bringing a 64 T-BIRD in for repairs. I am impressed by your knowlage of lincolns  wow! BTW I use to own a 72 LTD= LOVE/TO/DRIVE I miss it but was a gas hog.

Let me know what the bird is in for. I had a 65 and two 66s which were very similar. Front disc calipers were a pest and parts hard to get when they were less then 10 years old - cross your fingers if you need parts for those brakes!

Tom, I'm just curious, what kinda price tag would you put on a vehicle like this in ment condition? I did talk with the owner 73 mark 4 /steering column needed, he doesn't have the original ,he thew it away. If I understood him right the problem was the shifter part was broken,too bad, now he needs the whole thing starting at the yoke.Its starting to rain here temp 67 , might delay him bringing T-BIRD,got a camera,will take pictures download to post

Too bad on the Mark as the shifter think does break and you can replace just that. Those broke because the roll pin came out and folks kept using the car.
Valuations: It's an emotional thing and doesn't really make much sense. What does "Mint" mean - there would be 10 levels of Mint. Then there are dumb things like the color.
How rare is the exact car? Is it a special edition, converts will always bring the most attention in birds.
Birds run in three model years at a time and each group has their favorite. Ex: 61, 62, 63 looked similar. There was a two seater roadster in there like a Batmobile that would bring real bucks. 64, 65, 66 looked similar with the catfish look and taillights that went sequential 1-2-3- mechanically pointing the direction which was cool. Love seat back seat, bucket fronts, neat aircraft like dash, swing away steering wheel. Popular engine was the standard 315HP 390 4V with a 428 optional at least in 66. 66 was the pick of those as it had the famous C-6 trans which was hard to kill.
You need to see if the car is a good looker and driver needing little or nothing and then the degree of how good it is. Fixed up and how well or just preserved from new - that would catch the most bucks. Unrestored VERY low mile origs are a catagory of their own and price is no object to serious collectors.
Give it a good look with observations of what is good and what is in need. Bondo work is a no no. Check exhaust on these - all were duals with two mufflers and two resonators. Big bucks and should be all stainless by now or deduct. Use a magnet - stainless won't hold one! A weak spot is interior door arm rests - are they good or duct tape!
4-5-6 all had four piston front disc brakes - they should work and look good - backs are same as fairly new trucks now with drums.
These are "unit body" cars with the strongest floor pan ever put in cars that I know of. No rust allowed at torque boxes.
I'll check and see what some others are asking for these. Ebay, CraigsList and then the high end dealers when they get real nice.
You can check value guides at Edmunds.com - I think they cover these but you have to take that with a grain of salt as they can't know with all the wheeling and dealing in this market.

I'm wondering about its condition too? Gotta go p/u a reman trans for a 2001 windstar,I have a one bay shop should haved made it a 2 bay.But the windstar has to come first.Will keep you updated on T-BIRD.

I had that exact car with just the 390 which was scary enough! If it shows, note the dash and door panels are excellent but not OE and the vinyl roof is gone as are the landau bars on the sail panel - origs looked like a hearse. My guess on this one is it's a good redo of a good orig car. Should fetch $10k. Real orig would be about $30k. It's not fair as I knew these things new in showrooms and not so old when I owned them back when. Hope that shows, T

Tom, I saw the T-BIRD pics, in one of the photos I notice something on the right under the hood looked like a black bag FOMOCO on it, I'm thinking its a anti-freeze resivoir?, sense back in the day vehicles didn't have one.Looking at these cars bring back some memories, huh Tom?

That bag is for the washer fluid - the expansion tank is metal and on top in the engine pic. Most cars didn't do expansion tanks so if you filled radiator you messed up the next driveway you stopped at Not as if I would recall these things of course!

At some of the car shows down here I notice that The best car shows are up north or way south not that much here One of bro-inlaw up Ohio has a model-t-ford gas tank in front dash, safety wasn't a issue back then I guess. On another subject I did call bakers and talked to Julie the the assembly could cost up to $600 told the person who needed it, he said he would call back
