need help what is this part link to pic of part

need help what is this part link to pic of part Sign In

Can anyone tell me what this black box is it's on a 92 cavalier rs with a 6 cyl 3.1 multiport there is a link to the picture of the part in question and tell me what it does I found a disconnected wire to it

That’s called the Map (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor; it’s an electronic vacuum gauge.
The map tells the computer the amount of vacuum in the engine; the computer uses this input to determine the load on the engine. The higher the vacuum the lower the load on the engine or the higher the load the lower the vacuum.
Example: you’re driving up a steep hill, your foot is ¾ the way into the throttle. The engine is working hard climbing the hill; engine vacuum will be low. The MAP sensor sends this signal to the computer; in turn the computer will add more fuel to increase the power.
This is a very basic description of the sensor’s job and what the computer does with this info but that’s kind of what it does.

okay now i'm confused I bought a book for my car today and it says that should be the vechile speed sensor that the (map) is located on the firewall behind the alternator

Throw that book away because that is 100% for sure the MAP sensor.
