my car rolls backward

I have a 2007 nissan versa (CVT) that I've had since july. It's always been this way, but only recently did I ever get a clue (I am not a car person haha) that this isn't normal...
the car rolls backward on an incline, even a little bitty one like a driveway. this is if the car is in DRIVE and both feet are off the pedals, it will roll backward. particularly dangerous if I need to stop at the top of a hill. luckily there aren't really very many hills in my area so I can just avoid the situation...but this doesn't seem right and probably needs addressing. what seems to be the problem?

This car not familiar to me exactly but first let's say it's not really right to have your foot OFF the brake when stopped either. Most automatics won't roll back on slight inclines - they vary with that. I know of know assertive device that is designed to prevent that as any vehicle I've ever noted would if allowed on steep grades at least.
Being that new I suggest comparing it with another at a dealer or just ask if this car is new to you. Is this something new and you've owned it a while? If so, first question is, is the idle where it should be or any noted change in that?
At one year old this would be a warranty repair if in fact there is a problem - hard to say without really seeing it do that,

I'm confused by what you say about it not being okay to have your foot brake on when stopped? I have to put my foot on the brake to stop the car for a red light. I noticed the problem when I was stopped at a red light at the top of a hill. When I took my foot off the brake to put it on the gas to start, the car rolled backwards. I then tested it again on a driveway, and the same thing happened.
It's always been this way, not a new occurance. Idle is where it should be.

Brain damage here! What I meant is when you are in gear (any) and stopped, you should have the foot brake applied or on the pedal. Cars don't even shift out of park without doing that. On a steeper hill with standard shift cars (I guessed this is an automatic as you said put in DRIVE) you do need to hold service or use parking brake to prevent rollback. Not so common with automatics unless the slope/grade is more than a little. On hill starts I would hold the car with either parking brake or left foot on service brake till gas pedal and engine power was enough to know the car would go forward only when brake released.
If it always did it - then how long have you owned this and are now just bringing it up?

okay that makes more sense thanks
I've had it since july but I live in a very flat area so I don't come across it very much. I just didn't ever have to 2-foot it on a hill w/ my vw jetta that I used to own so I thought it might be a problem with the car.

It may be normal as once said here. When you think about it, if the engine isn't under load at idle from being in gear too much it would add to fuel efficiency a bit. My own driving routine doesn't have many hill starts so I don't think about this all that much for myself nor would notice just test driving other cars.
Just funny: I did live and own a standard shift car in Denver - there were some roads going up into the rockies with stop signs and sure enough the car behind would leave about enough room to hold an envelope so rolling back a mm was out and with a foot parking brake and standard shift took three feet!!
