i have a 2000 pont. grand am and i have just switched over to synthetic oil.
i have heard that once you use synthetic you cannot go back to conventional motor oil. however, i have been told quite the contrary by other people regarding this matter. so who's right? can i go back to conventional motor oil after using synthetic motor oil? could someone please explain this to me? thanks.

I've used synthetics for decades. You can switch back and forth as long as the rating is correct for you vehicle. I'll be trying the site's sponsor's "Amsoil" soon. My personal respect for synthetics is their tolerance to heat and NOT making sludge. You pay for them, and I don't mind as I want 20 years out of my cars! Engines cost loads more than oil!

Just amusing.... I towed a 7,500lb boat with a 79 Buick Electra that overheated so bad you could lite a fine Cuban cigar off its hood ornament! Later found NO sludge under valve covers etc.!!!!! I really think the oil made a difference. It really depends on your use and needs.

Amusing II ... I now own a truck that could move a house and the boat is gone!! Go figure? Be well,

Hey Markup,

Like tom was saying synthetic tends to leave a lot less sludge. Thats why when you convert from conventional motor oil to synthetic people say to use motor flush to clean out the sludge and junk left by the oil.

2 questions, why would you want to go back to conventional motor oil?

conventional motor oil burns at a lower temperature(thats why all the build ups happen) and it leaves larger engine scars, since they try and force different leaves within the oil.

Where synthetic oils are made to lower engine wear scars and burn at temps over 400 degrees F.

So from my knowledge if you want to go from synthetic to conventional motor oil, just drain out the synthetic and replace with regular..

But remember that its more of a process to go to synthetic, so it should be telling you that (regular oil leaves more junk in the engine) But thats why a quart is going for about $1.49 these days.

Thats why I use synthetic, besides in life you normal do get what you pay for. Even with Oils.

So ask Why would you want to switch back? If its to save money, remember that some synthetics, are designed to go beyond the 3,000 mile oil change. Thats how new cars are coming out with 100k first oil changes.

Hope this helps.

Re: motor oil: synthetic to conventional Sign In

I really think it's cheaper in the long run! I currently use Mobil 1, and will secure some Amsoil and may make the switch.

I don't have an expensive government study on this but DO have years of experience with this subject.

I was working for Mobil gas/repair station when they really started with the synthetic. They only sold 5-20 in silver cans at first and made claims that they retracted about the product.

I will say this. My pull start 12.5 HP mower noticably pulls easier with synthetic oil.

If you can find a couple cared for cars about 10 years old, take a look at the under side of the oil cap and top half of the dipstick on one that used conventional oil and one that used a synthetic. I really think you will see the difference in sludge and staining. I can't fill a fingernail with sludge in any engine I own!!

If Amsoil is as I've seen about 25% better than others, I will use it and pay the higher price and will probably become a dealer for it.

This is a great site with great folks - it would be foolhardy to endorse a bad product. Note: I make NO money from this site or any product mentioned. Happy motoring,

Re: motor oil: synthetic to conventional Sign In

This is true, since the 70's Amsoil has made good sythetic motor oils.... I really feel that mobil and everyone will be forced to spend more money to put out a better motor oil in the future, but until people become aware of the other products out their they will lead in sales. Amsoil just looks a little better since they give everyone the chance to market a motor oil and retain some profits.... Haven't seen Mobil 1 Giving me that chance...

Yesterday I was shocked to see Mobil 1 selling for $5.89 a quart. I thought it was in the $4 dollar range, this made it just about cheaper to buy Amsoil and ship it.

If you decide to go to Sythetic, take not at the running temp of your car and average RPM's at neutral. You will see the rpm's drop, (less stress in the engine) cooler temps, also (less friction on the engine) all means longer car engine life.

Just joined the forum and enjoying it. I am in the oil/racing oil business and the Royal Purple is outstanding but very expensive. I would suggest you look at Red Line, Schaeffer's along with the Royal Purple and compare the td sheets on the products you are interested in.

Re: motor oil: synthetic to conventional Sign In

Welcome to the site. I've been useing synthetics since the begining and this site has Amsoil as a sponsor and will try some. Sure sounds like an impressive product! Haven't seen this "Royal Purple" for sale so can't comment. For that matter I drive so few miles with three vehicles I'd probably get away with not changing oil at all! I live in the "Rust Belt" and most cars fail from rust long before engine failure.

At any rate enjoy the site. I love it as it is all inclusive, hey tell us your wipers don't work right, or your sun visor drops or up to your engine has failed, and we're here for you, best,
