Hello. I am not exsperenced with cars, so i thought i would try some help. I recently bought a 95 pontaic sunfire 2 door, i know the engine is a 2.2.
I took it in for a etest and it failed accross the board. So I bought a net catelitic converter, a EGR valvle, O2 sensor, feul filter. After all thos items were installed I took it down for a retest, everything passed expsept for the hydrocarbons. So my question is, if anyone knows how and what i can do to fix this so that everything passes the next time i take it in, I would be very greatful!
I dont have the sheet on me of how much the limit was and what it failed by, but i do know it wasnt much, they told me it was borderline pass and fail, but it failed. Now I just dont know what to do to help it so it passes no problem. Ok thanks in advance!!!

Replace the spark plugs and spark plug wires..
Replace the air filter...
Good idea to change the engine oil and oil filter as well...
If it didn't fail by much ,that should get it thru.....how many miles on the vehicle/engine?
Does it run OK...

hey thankls for the reply.
I bought new spark plugs, and changed the oil before the first time I etested it.
Someone told me about looking at the timing, but i have no idea what that meens lol
but yes, it wasnt far from passing, so it must be minor whatever it is

sorry, i forgot to answer to the miles, the car has 222.094 km on it. it runs great, only when you start it, it seems to miss, but once its started it seems to run great

You bought the plugs...then I assume you installed them already...
Replace the plug wires...
Remember,faulty plug wires can foul a new spark plug too..so recheck them..did you gap the plugs correctly?..
2.2 L engines are known for head gasket problems as well...sometimes even real slight at first where coolant can get into a cylinder and affect the spark plug.
Test compression if you have the capabilities....should be Ok if it runs ok..
I assume there isn't a check engine light on...cause I know here they won't even test the car with "any"warning lights of any kind on...
But have the computer tested for codes anyway at Autozone,they do it for free....MAN, thats a nice word "FREE" isn't it....

Yes i did take the old plugs out and put the new ones in, im not sure what you meen by gap them though.
My uncle told me he can get ahold of the thing that reads for compression so i will do that, but he said like you said that it should be fine cause it runs fine.
also, i asked the person that ran the test if it could be something with the head gasket, and he said no, because if it was sdomething to do it the head gasket then it would have been the "knox" that failed..
so basicly I should buy new spark plug wiers is all i can really do, with the exseption of the compression test.
i cannot take it for a computer check, because it is not licenced, nor fit for the road yet, i have to have it etested before i do anything as it goes for licening, so this is my delema lol

it does however seem to miss when you first start it..when driving, it runs great..but when it park, and you rev it up high, it also seems to miss...im not sure what that meens, but this is what im told

The spark plugs need to be gapped before installation...read this link..it should shed light on this..
If this was not done....it will affect driveability..

Where I live,they won't let you license it until it passes,but we can go and get a temp.permit for 7 days that allows you to drive to and from testing facility..and I'm sure a stop at Autozone along the way...LOL

I will check to make sure its gapped, i will follow that guide!
a friend of mine told me it could be the timing, but on my car there is no distributer, and not exactly sure how to check the timing.
Like i said the car runs great when driving, i just wish i could pass the e-test, i was so dam close!! friggin hydrocarbons lol
I talked to a guy at a shop today, he told me a few things to check
he told me to do a compression test
check spark plugs and wires(i bought new spark plugs but not wires)
check for vaccume leak
check timing
those listed above he said would most likly make sure the car passes.
today i bought a pcv valve
so now that i know what to look for...the problem is, i have no idea where they are and what to do lol
so if anyone could help on checking any of those listed id be greatful!!
