intake manifold + head gasket Sign In

I'm a newbie and I hope yall can help!
The other day our

1996 Buick LeSabre
6 cyl. / 130k mls.

was running hot. We took it to the nearest shop and they told us it was the intake manifold that broke and we need to replace that + replace the water pump + thermostat + clean valves and plugs + coolant flush = $900. The guy said we're lucky it wasn't the head gasket.

We went to pick up the car yesterday evening and the guy there said we couldn't take it yet cause the plugs were still wet. Then this morning he said we couldn't take it cause he needed to look at some tubes. Then at lunch he said our car won't start now because our head is cracked. I feel like cracking my head alright! I don't understand. How come we drove the car in - and now all of a sudden our head gasket's cracked and it won't start?

Please help me in my confusion. Also, should we run away fast from this car? We've already put more money than we can stand into it in the last two years. We could be putting that money into car payments.

What would y'all do? Unsure

Heather; Well, hindsight is always 20/20. The V6 GM engines are known for intake manifold gaskets leaking coolant, externally. If this was the case, and the engine overheated badly enough, it's possible to blow a head gasket or even crack a cylinder head. With that said however, a very simple test would have shown if a head gasket was leaking in the first place. Which, in my opinion, should have been the very first thing to check. It is possible, that the intake manifold is leaking coolant into the engine if the gasket was damaged during installation.
Which V6 is in your car? btw, you mentioned that they had to replace the intake manifold? That is disturbing, to me. To replace the head gaskets, the intake manifold has to come back off, of course. I can't tell anyone how to run their business, but if it was mis-diagnosed in the first place, I would assume that you only be charged the difference between the head gasket repair and what was charged for the intake. Just my opinion, for what it's worth.
