Hi I have a 2004 Chevy Cavilier 2.2 with apx72000 miles on it.

Me in all my infinate wisdom decided to take my car through a puddle to deep for it (1 1/2 - 2 ft deep). long story short, it stalled in the puddle and I pushed it out. I tried to turn it over after I pushed it out and the engine exploded. (looks like a piston rod went. 2 pucture holes in rear of engine)

I get all the routine maintanance done at the same place which has a record of it as well.

My insurance is trying to tell me its probably from lack of maintanace/ wear and tear/ coincidence and not to do with water.

So in short, can water cause an engine to explode?

YES
Liquid does not compress; if water was able to enter the air induction system and end up on top of a piston; you’ll have what is called hydrostatic lock.
When this happens something has to give and in this case a piston connecting rod was the weak point, broke and came out the side of the engine block.

Ditto! Engine can't compress a liquid as said. Who is responsible for that is up to you and your insurance.

IMO - don't ever drive thru water over the center of a wheel and even then AYOR. Cars aren't made to take water and it wrecks tons of things that may show up later,

Re: infinate wisdom Sign In

Thank you Dan and Tom,
I hit the puddle during the heavy rain storm and I have comprehensive coverage. It should fall under it but then again I am dealing with an insurance company,

Thanks again
