I have a 93 Ford F150 with 4.8l @229,000 miles: I suspect a faulty head gasket based solely on physical evidence, no compression check yet. I am constantly losing coolant water and there is never any evidence of leaks on the ground. I can see no evidence of leaks on or near the engine itself. When running the engine in neutral I can see water dropping from the tailpipe from startup up to and including fully heated engine. I just replaced the entire exhaust system from catalytic converter back. The muffler had two holes, one just starting. The rear tailpipe was rusted through at the front hangar. Water dropped out when removing all sections. My inquiry is basically what general idea of cost am I looking at for replacing the head gasket, if that is the only problem (head not warped ).

Jay; I'm unfamiliar with a 4.8L engine. Could you double-check the engine size? Those year Ford V8s were usually a 5.0L or 5.8L. Regardless, head gasket failures were very uncommon. Not to say it's impossible, but not very unlikely. Moisture out of the exhaust is normal. When fuel burns and goes through the catalytic converter, it makes it's own water. Granted, after driving long enough, and the exhaust system gets hot enough, it will (or should) evaporate the residual moisture. If you have water leaking into the combustion chamber you should be able to tell by looking at the spark plugs. The one that is getting the water will be nice and white as compared to the others. Also, should be causing a misfire. A system pressure test would be in order, first.

Ah...that would be the infamous 4.9L (300cu. in.)... I must say that I've NEVER run across a blown head gasket in one of those. So, the same would apply.

Ya - I have heard of it but none in my custody. Head bolts can stretch with head gasket like failures. It's a must if those are in fact the torque once and toss em head bolts. Make sure and do the testing but do seriosly consider new bolts AND the new head gasket job if that's what shows up,
