99 huyndai sonata, v6. front wheel drive:
when I start the car all is well but, when I place it in gear or reverse I get a loud grinding noise which doesnt stop unless I put in park. of course the car doesn't move..It started about a week after I ran over object in the road which caused a blowout on front and rear passenger tires and ruined both rims. after replacing I discovered that there was a "wobble" and it pulled to the right. when I'd hit even a slight bumped the car felt like it was gonna go out of control. It appeared as though the front wheel was slightly out of plumb/crooked...well, my kid took the car one day and called and said I'm broke down. this is when the grinding noise started. any ideas what the "grinding" is. and perhaps what was causing the "wobble" and pulling...oh, I popped the hood and saw "dark brown/blackish" fluid splattered all over the engine compartment...........Thankyou
p.s. I posted this in transmission problems as well I wanted as many people to see this as poss.

In the future, please only post in one spot. Gets confusing for us to have responses in different boards. You definately hit something pretty good to wreck the rims. Good chance something else got busted up. Wheel bearing, ball joint and strut damage are all possible. Get it up in the air and pull some tires to have a look. Since you're having a sloppy ride along with grinding, bearing damage is very likely. Please don't try to drive it anywhere until repairs have been made, as its critical parts are now compromised and extremely unsafe.

almost sounds like you have a problem with the axle half-shaft. might have come out of the splines in the tranny thus also explaining the fluid in the engine bay

sounds pretty bad/expensive..I'm gonna put car up in air and take off tires like suggested..I'll post what I find..I may be able to post a close up pic if you think it might help...thanx

I am unable to send pics however, I pulled the tires and found that the
rod going from the rotor/wheel which has a rubber boot on both ends.(I
assume this is the cv axle?) the boot on the end which goes into the
trans is torn apart and I can see 3 "nubs" on the end which goes into
the which look like they should be inside matching "holes" well, they
are completely deattached and seen to have been broken as there are
jagged edges.. also, there is a rod which attaced to the frame that
seems to have broken weld joints...I have a bad feeling I'm screwed.

well, i had it towed to the transmission specialist and he said the same thing. the trans axle pulled out but the tranny itself appears to be okay gonna cost approx $275.00 which I can swallow, however the control arm nd pulled out of the frame as a result of rusting of the frame. so part of the frame that holds the engine and tranny needs replacing. he showed me other areas where the frame has holes from rusting. the parts themselves arent the expensive part. its the labor I'm afraid of. I should know today how much everythings gonna set me back. he said he can replace the axle but if I dont have the arm and frame replaced the axle will only pull out again. he said thats why the tire on that side looks crooked...thanx for help. let ya know the total damage.
