fuel delivery issue

1999 ford crown Victoria, not a police model. 4.6 v-8 with 146,000 miles. I just bought this car from the original owner. I noticed that, when I fill it up with gas, I try to start it up and it is very hard to start. when it does start it runs very rough for a minute or so then smooth's out. I tried changing the fuel filter with no improvement and I am at a loss as to what it can be. I did start it up and let it warm up and removed the fuel filler cap while it was running to see what would happen. it began to run very rough and tried to die but after replacing the cap it smoothed out again and seemed fine. please help

suggestion- 1) drive the car to autozone, advance auto, orielys et al - get a FREE scan its FREE write down all the codes they give you, 2) Sounds like a fuel issue - we will need to do a fuel pressure test AND a pressure leak down test - need how to info? 3) out of an abundence of caution - quick easy and cheap - check the engine oil for evidence of fuel- Don't open gas cap with engine running without understanding the EVAP system... so for now don't

I will take it to o'rielly's and have the codes read. I will check the oil for gasoline, I assume it will smell of gas if it's in it. the fuel pressure test and all, I am in the dark as to how to do it.

Does it only do this when you fill it up? You could have a stuck open purge valve. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

You can smell.the gas if there's a bit in it. Or you can see a rainbow hue to it as well. As for the gas pressure test, if you aren't familiar with working on vehicles, let a professional do this......after all this is gas we are talking about.

Don't know what you mean by smelling gas and rainbows. Are you smelling too much gas, lowered81? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

when I get in it to go somewhere it starts quickly but bogs down for a second then smooth's out. it then runs great but does the same routine upon starting 8 out of 10 times or so. the worst is when I fill it up, like I said in my first post.

lets not guess- 1) codes.... I sure there will be a clue 2) fuel pressure... ask about a loaner at orielys 3) fuel pressure leak down with KOEO

Kev is right on this and I suspect EVAP issues. Just to add some of my own crap: * Don't overfill fuel when getting gas. When pump shuts down quit about there. * Sometimes but not usually so fast the wrong gas cap mixed up at a gas station if that is even possible can be the cause of strange problems. Not real sure how to check one if it looks right or worse still attached if made that way OE but might just toss it for known correct one so it isn't part of this problem messing up diagnosis. Easy to take those out of the picture anyway, T

My guess is stuck open purge valve. With the engine running unplug the purge valve electrical connector and the line going to the canister. If you have vacuum on the nipple that goes to the canister, the purge valve is stuck open. During refueling if the purge valve is stuck open, the fuel vapors will be pushed into the engine and cause it to flood out. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I am not familiar with the term koeo. I have no idea the procedure involved to do this nor the tools to pressure test. is this something they do at auto zone?

"KOEO" = Key On Engine Off. No, I doubt the zone will do the test but ask if the rent out the tools if you wish to do this yourself, T

OK - What you are looking for is first the pressure when just key on to the run position. You probably already hear pump buzz for a couple seconds if it will run at all and stop at a preset pressure. That's the static KOEO pressure and should hold. Testers vary how they are sold from basic thru sets with tons of adaptors for assorted vehicles. Never say never with parts and spec look ups where this came from but pressure range said 30-45 PSI and didn't expound much. Just find out what it is and post results. Tester should look a lot like this.......... That one said $44.99 local to me. No clue what is rentable store by store so ask. They should also verify what pressure you should see for this car. IDK - I don't use that name store much but they are all over the place, T

I took the car to have the codes pulled at 2 different places and there were no trouble codes, at either location. I will test the purge valve today and, if that's not it, I will have the fuel pressure and injectors tested by a mechanic. thanks to all of you for your help with my problem. I will post the results once its complete.
