front hub bearing Sign In

1991 ford tempo gl 4cyl front wheel drive automatic transmission

I just replaced the right front hub bearing almost two months ago and it has already worn out to the point that i can wobble the tire about two to three inches i bought the car used and the guy i bought it from told me he had this same problem and had fixed it before i was wondering what could cause this problem i know the alignment is slightly off but it is close enough that the car drives straight help with this will be much appreciated as this is the only car i have

Try putting a good strong impact gun on the center nut. I'm willing to bet it was just never tight enough and the races are separating.

Re: front hub bearing Sign In

I would have to go along with Hammer that it might not of been torqued correctly the 1st time to come loose this quick.

I would be a little leary to just tighten it up if it's been wobbling 2 to 3 inches & you've been driving it. The new bearing could already be damaged. If it had a bad hub that didn't get replaced the 1st time around, then it's gonna have to come apart again, sooner or later...... Sooner is at your choice.....later is when it happens.... where ever it happens....

well here is the thing the hub bearing on this car is a sealed unit that is pressed on to the hub and into the steering knuckle

No it isn't. The outer hub is one piece but the inner is 2 piece and if it's not torqued properly, the inner race will separate. Trust me, put a gun to it and see if you play disappears.
If it does, you can drive the vehicle to see if there is any growling. if there is none, I think you can trust the bearing. they usually don't get damaged when this happens unless it has been driven a really long time.

Yes I realize this Wayne. Actually the bearing is pressed into the knuckle & then the hub into the bearing after the snap ring is put back on but I know what you mean.

Now I'm assuming you have verified it is a loose bearing again and not a loose wheel, ball joint, strut mount, etc.

Given it is a bearing & done correctly the 1st time then there wouldn't be a problem now....correct

In my experience the only time I've seen a new bearing go out that quickly was if the axle nut was under or over torqued.... 174-225 ft lbs is the specs. Also if a bad hub was reused that could make the bearing go out. You need to inspect the hub, if the old bearing grooved the hub...even slightly, it's trash. I've seen guys gamble & win.... personally I'm not that lucky & don't like redoing a job.

Bottom line. If it is a bearing, then something went wrong. I'm not saying for sure it's what I say, cuz I can't see the car. It could even be a defect bearing but that would be rare.... If it's done correctly there usually is a problem......
