front brake rotors	Sign In

I took my volvo v70 in for it's 60,000 km servicing and have been asked to replace the front brake rotors. I've never heard of the rotors wearing out befor the pads, although they need to be replaced as well. Does this sound normal, or should I get another opinion?

It’s not abnormal for a rotor to fail before pads wear out mostly due to the brake pads being made out of semi metallic material. These brake pads will cause the rotors to rust. Two bear pieces of metal resting against each other overnight; add a little moister and you have the perfect rust generator. You were saying 60,000klm. I assume you’re up here in Canada with me; so lets add a little salt water to that mix during the winter. LOL
Also the brake pads can withstand the heat of aggressive braking (main reason for going to metallic; heat absorption) more so then the rotors causing the rotors to warp.
So no it’s unusual for this at all.
Ask them if there are ceramic brake pads available for your car; ceramics are not as hard on the rotors plus they are much quieter and cleaner; less brake dust will form on your wheels.

Like Dan I like the ceramics. Rotors really aren't meant to be machined like way old days in the interest of saving weight and "unsprug" weight which gives the car better ride and handling. Another problem with machineing them is the thinner they get the more apt they are to warp and you will just be back in there again, T
