female who knows nothin about cars please help Sign In

I have a 2007 Ford Taurus my engine size is a 3.0 and ih 92,000 miles on it.

My gas just sucks right out of my car for example for every mile i go it takes out 5 to 10 miles and so on for another mile and i pretty sure you can do that math after all that added up. Well my boyfriend changed the spark plugs and wires and it still eats up my gas do u have any ideas what it could be. and my air filter thing is cleaned out and i stopped using unleaded fuel and ive been putting gas treatment in it everytime then i was told you weren't supposed to do that a lot. please let me know if you come up with anything. i have to fill my tank up almost every two days cuz of this. and its a big hassle

amy; Do you have a 'Check Engine' or 'Service Engine Soon' lamp illuminated? If so, many parts stores will access the trouble codes stored, for free. Don't let them sell you any parts, but post the codes, if any, here and we will try and guide you through it. There are many reasons for fuel economy to drop. Low tire pressures, transmission problems, various engine sensors, ect. As far as the fuel goes, I'm not aware of any leaded gasoline available anymore. I'm pretty certain that what you are buying is unleaded. Not sure of what part of the country you live, but the corner convienience store or Joe's diner is not where I'd buy fuel. Chevron, Texaco, Union 76, and Mobil are almost always rated at the top. For what it's worth. I won't put anything else in my vehicles. Fuel additives; Most are snake oil. A waste of money. All of the major brands of gasoline have detergents in them, already. Fuel injector cleaning is an important maintenance item that is commonly overlooked. And, to do it right, must be done with a machine or taking the injectors out and cleaning them ultrasonically. Of course, doing it on the car with a machine is much cheaper. That will help with fuel economy, as well. Feel free to ask anything. We'll help the best we can.

If the check engine light did come on, then the PCM will store the trouble code(s) at that time.

From the top:

What is the actual MPG you are getting in what type of driving? Don't rely on on board instant readings but take a real measurement. Fill tank - write down miles or reset trip odometer. When refilled calculate the #of miles driven divided by the # of gallons used. You have to do this a few times under similar circumstances as filling the tank can be off by a gallon depending on the pumps and when they click off automatically.

So please report what you are actually getting for MPG and what you expected,

I don't know the exact layout of that digital dash. Normally you reset a trip odometer and if this car is one that estimates how many miles you can go on the fuel left that part may not be correct.

Take real old fashioned MPG readings. I was going to guess that this could be fine and 20.7 ish MPG for that car for assorted driving I'd consider normal and if true city driving that's excellent!

Wow; I agree with Tom. 20.7 in town, with a V6? That's pretty darned good. If you took a freeway trip, you'd probably see high 20's, maybe even 30mpg. But, to be sure what you are getting, do as Tom suggested. The old fashioned way. Both my wife's car and my truck have the digital readouts and are very accurate, for what it's worth.
