faulty install of timing belt cause air fuek sensor failure? Sign In

the goodyear mechanic changed the timing belt of my 2002 toyota highlander 4WD6 at 115000 miles. the belt was not a toyota belt. three weeks later the engine light comes on. i brought the car to the dealer where it was found that the t belt was installed incorrectly. they replaced the t belt with a new one. the goodyear has covered the cost. so far so good. another three weeks later the light is back on again. the next day my car needs to be jumpstarted. now they tell me it is the bank 1 sensor 1 air fuel heater circuit that is failing. it needs a new sensor and a new battery. they also tell me that the sensor failure probably is the result of the previous faulty t belt installation. how can i find out whether this is the case? i would love to have goodyear cover this cost also if possible, but before i go there i need to know if there is a case standing. also, could that have affected the battery? it seems odd that it all happened at once. what do you think?

It seems odd that all this has happened , but it is pure coincidence. The air fuel heater circuit is your O2 sensor. On this model it has a heated O2 sensor which means there is a small "heater unit" inside the O2. This heater brings the O2 sensor up to operating temp on cold starts. The heater itself is bad in the O2 so the whole sensor needs to be replaced. The failure of the heated O2 has nothing to do with the incorrect installation of the T belt. The same with the battery failure. It is just that. A failure. I would say don't waste your time trying to get Goodyear to fork out money on these additional items because the likely won't. Just stay away from that Goodyear from now on.

Also you may consider staying away from that dealer too. If they are telling you these item failures are a result of the T belt snafoo then they are either dishonest or don't have a strong grasp of what system have to do with others on an automobile. Either way it is dangerous to have your car serviced at a place like that.

Goodyear misinstalled a timing belt & the vehicle was driven 3 weeks???????? Yea right

You get one cam a tooth off & it would've been back then next day...tell me I'm wrong

Don't know the whole story but this one sure doesn't sound right.....

Maybe have Goodyear pay for all the maintance of said vehicle for the next 5 years.....that would be even better.....Laugh
