My 1997 bonneville always starts. Three days ago it wouldn't. It flutters like it wants to start. Battery good. Fuel good. We had two really warm days last week after which it wouldn't start. Connection to weather? Can I spray starting fluid in the air intake or somewhere? Gas engine - 6 cyl.

If fuel is good, why would you need starting fluid.....i'm not a huge fan of using that unless absolutely needed.
can cause harm to the engine if misused.
first, check for spark ,does it have spark.??
how did you check that the fuel is good??pressure check???
is the battery fully charged?does it crank over strong...?
my reason for that question is,you stated that it flutters like it wants to start.
did it crank slowly and flood the engine?
you can lightly spray a mist into the air intake just to see if will hit/start.but if not don't keep trying it.
>>>i recommend first to check the battery to make sure its has ample voltage and check for spark and fuel pressure.<<<<<<<<

if no spark, you'll need access to a scan tool with data stream capabilities to check for cranking rpm.that will decide your next step...

The fuel is fresh. I thought it made the normal fluttering sound like it's going to start. Nothing sounds different then normal. The battery is super - cranks over really fast like usual. I can't technically say it is sparking because I don't have the right tools. I can only assume the fuel pressure is ok. I can hear the pump make its pumping noise.

Re: engine won't start Sign In

well provided it didn't jump time or anything like that, then the first step will be to have the vehicle checked for spark and check fuel pressure like i stated in last post...
its a good sign to hear the pump run but still could have low fuel pressure.
i would explain how to check for spark, but if you've never done it ,i don't want you to get hurt/zapped if there is spark.
do you have anyone that knows at least basics about cars to assist you with this??

I do lots of things i shouldn't, but don't really know how to check for spark. In response to your reference to timing, I wonder if the timing belt went on vacation? Could I determine that myself?

Re: engine won't start Sign In

the bonneville would be chain driven, not belt driven...
you would need to check compression to see .
a trained ear can tell right away from the sound it would make if it jumped time.
to check for spark, you will need to pull one spark plug wire off at the plug or at the coil tower if thats accessible.
it is high energy ignition and packs a wallop if you get zapped.
best to use a grounding probe to test, definitely don't want to hold the wire by hand while cranking.some use an old/known good spark plug inserted into the wire and grounded to the engine block.
DO NOT position in any way that can cause it to be near or come in contact with a fuel source.
i think autozone even sells a spark tester tool. that would be your best bet.
if there is no spark, again the next step would be to check for cranking rpm witha scan tool,if there is no spark and cranking rpm, thats going to lead you to a ignition module and or coils problem,or wiring .
if no cranking rpm that s going to lead to crankshaft position sensor,or cam position sensor or wiring problems, pcm problems,etc..can get involved...would need diagnostic flow charts for help...so you don't just throw parts at it,can get costly.
