engine trouble

2001 Ford Focus, 2.0 Split Port, 80,000 miles. My problem started with a vaccuum leak. I fixed that but now have another. It seems I am only getting spark on cylinders 1 and 4. 2 and 3 are not firing. The car will start, sometimes, and idle very rough. Driving, it has no power and when stopping it stalls. Check engine light was on but has not come back on since being reset. Help.

Guest; At first glance, sounds like half the coil went, but looking at the schematic, one half controls #1 & #2, the other half #3 & #4. So, we may be looking at an injector problem. Remove all of the spark plugs and tell us what you see. Do they all look the same? Are two dark? Or real white and clean? If it's a coil issue, I'd think that #2 & #3 will be dark, maybe even fuel fouled. If it's an injector issue, I'd expect them to be white and very clean, from lack of fuel. Since #2 & #3 are right next to each other, it is possible that you've blown a head gasket between those two cylinders, but we'll need to look a bit further. If you can, do a compression test while you have the plugs removed. Is this the SOHC or DOHC engine? Loren SW Washington

Thanks for the reply. 2 & 3 were fouled, 1 & 4 were clean. I replaced the coil, plugs and wires. The car is now running very smoothly for the most part. At first, it stalled at idle after about 15 minutes of driving but after running about 80 miles yesterday that seems to have resolved itself. However, now my check engine light is on. In answer to your question, it is a SOHC. If you think it is prudent, I will still do the compression test, although I am getting good power at this point.

If it is running normal, like it used to, sounds like you've got it. Keep a very close eye on engine temp and coolant level, just in case. Also, have the computer codes read to find out why the check engine light is on. It could be a consequential code from the way it was running, or you still may have an existing problem. Most parts stores will retrieve the codes for free. Post any codes here, and we'll take a look. Loren SW Washington
