drivetrain Sign In

I have a 92 Grand Voyager, 3.3 engine, with 182,000 miles. I have a howling noise that increases with speed and vibration under stress. If going straight, the noise is very minimal or none at all. Bearing to the left even slightly brings on the noise the more left the more the noise. Sometimes it's not evident at all at all speeds and turns. The vibration is most evident at low speeds going up hills. Just like the noise sometimes it doesn't happen. I also fell thumping going around a bend at normal speed. I don't have any rips or tears in the CV boots. Is my problem still possibly the CV joint and which side, or is it the front wheel bearing, or is it internal in the drive train.

Re: drivetrain Sign In

You should check all items that rotate but "howling noise, vibration" that are pronounced with steering suggests wheel bearing or perhaps brake issues but all of those need be checked. CV joint usually will act up worst with steering to the limit and applying power - usually more of a "crackle" at first if so,

Re: drivetrain Sign In

The symptoms and noise you describe point to either a CV joint or a front wheel bearing. Usually, if you hear it turning left, it will be the right one, but noises like to transfer. Find a shop that can lift it while running. Should be able to find the origin. It's also possible that you could have a broken motor mount and under torque, the engine is lifting. Again, easy to check.

Thanks for the reply. The added thumping going around a bend to the right, wouldn't that indicate more to the dirver side front wheel bearing possibly being the whole problem.

Yes, very possible, but need to be sure prior to replacement.
