86 Honda 4dr auto - Replaced drivers side outdoor door handle and door won't close. Door latch is rotated down and won't move. Strikes the door jam catch and stops.
Appreciate any help, have taken the door apart too many times without success.

I think I know what happened to you. Hold the in or outside handle in open position and move the mechanism at the greasy door's latch open and it should work. It shut on you while you were working on it. You can do that with you finger to a normal car but most will snap open on their own. This one need a suggestion from you. Guess that's it of course,

Tom, Thanks.  I tried what you suggested but it only wiggled. I fooled around too much with the handle rods and now they must need adjusting. Do you know how I could re-adjust them? Thanks, Joe joegr@comcast.net

just to jump in here,for what Tom suggested to work is that the door lock must be in the unlocked position ..
don't know if you tried it that way or not..won't work if in lock position....

Jim N. Thanks for the tip to unlock the door. It was unlocked but in examining it closer I found I had stripped off the outer rubber covering of the rotating latch which was preventing it from closing! I got that fixed, closed the door and only the inside handle will now open the door. I suppose I've changed the adjustment to the outside handle, the one I had to replace, and it isn't adjusted properly to work. Is there a clue to how long the handle rod should be? If not I'd lengthen it as I believe it is might be a little shorter than where it originally was. Maybe that'll push the latch down a bit further and open the door, right? Thanks, Joe

Tom, I got the latch open. The replaced outside handle won't open the door, only the inside handle opens it. Have I changed the adjustment to the outside handle rod? Is there a way to readjust it or is it just trial and error? Thanks for the help, Joe

Hope you still have the panel off to take a look again. Whatever broke teh outside handle to begin with is probably the problem area. These things frequently use rods to the latch inside that actuate the jaws that clamp on the striker bolt/bar/hook on the door jam. Look at the motion of the parts of the latch inside with the one (inside) that works and watch how far it travels till it can let go to open the latch. Compare that with the outdoor handle you should note a difference.
The rod may have straightened out a bend in it such that now it's too long. You have to "eye it" and see where it's best to bend it again to achieve the right lengh. Just make sure it doesn't rub on something in its full travel if you adjust it and consider if the door panel back on can make it rub or restrict it when back together. It should be visable by looking. Good luck,
