In September 2004 I took my 92 Camry to a local repair shop to repair the speedometer. I paid to have the speedometer replaced. Upon starting the car I noticed that the Air Bag light stayed on. When I delivered the car It was working fine. Without even leaving the parking lot I reported it to the Service Rep., he in turn reported it the the Mechanic (who is also the owner of the shop). After briefly looking at it the Service Rep. told me that I would have to bring it back and pay for the diagnostic testing to find out what was wrong with it. I was not happy after shelling out $600 to replace the speedometer I had to pay another $80 to find out what the Mechanic/owner broke. On the way home I also noticed that the air vent on the driver's side was also broken; it won't close anymore. After an extended illness I finally was able to drive the car 100 miles to a Toyota dealer. They charged me $120 to diagnose the problem as a shorted out Air Bag sensor/computer $531 and a broken air vent assembly $116. The labor to fix it would run $160. The Toyota Service Rep told me that in all the years of working at Toyota he has never heard of the Air Bag sensor/computer shorting out before. He asked me if the Mechanic took the steering wheel off. I know that he had to take the air vent assembly off to get at the Speedometer. The Toyota Rep said that he could not say if it was because of what the Mechanic/owner did or did not do but strongly hinted that this was probable. Can anyone be more definitive?
Does anyone know if in order to change the speedometer on a 92 Camry does the steering wheel have to come off? I would appreciate any words of advice on how to recover anything from the Mechanic/owner who I feel is responsible for the shorted out Air bag sensor/computer and broken air vent assembly.

It''s possible your air vent was damaged during the speedo replacement but I doubt it had anything to do with air bag failure. Don't forget your car is 15 years old and plastic parts become brittle with time. Sometimes they break, no matter how much care is exercised during removal.
