cupped tires on 2004 Corolla, vibrations at low speed Sign In

I have a 2004 Toyota Corolla.
1.8L with about 60k miles on it. We bought it used, we're the 2nd owner.

I took it to the dealer for an inspection and they mentioned that the tires are cupped. I've noticed that the car tends to vibrate (bounce) at low speeds (30 - 35mph). This went away when I rotated the tires, but has come back.

I've read that cupped tires are caused by 1) bad tires or 2) bad struts or 3) both.

Questions:
- if the tires still have life, and I can deal with the vibes, am I causing damage to not deal w/ the cupped tires?
- could the cupped tires and the vibrations be unrelated?
- how difficult is it to replace struts own my own? :)

Thanks.

yes its usually struts that would cause this.......your cars mileage is on the low side of the scale for strut replacement.......they usually need to be done around 75k.

struts are not usually a DIY job.

Cupped tires are caused by two things; Incorrect tire balance or shocks/struts. Shocks/struts are designed to keep the tires on the ground. The cupping that is already there will, more than likely, continue to cause a "vibration"; And, once that wear pattern is established, you can't correct it. You can move the affected tires to the rear, but if you don't correct the problem, the same will happen to the ones that you've moved to the front.
When you 'bounce' the front end, it should come back up and stop. If it feels 'mushy' or continues to bounce, then the struts are weak. Due to the spring on most struts, it isn't a picnic to do at home, but is doable. If yours doesn't have the coil spring around the strut, then they are quite easy to do. Your call.

Just a comment:

Blackhawk - IMO if the tires are considered "safe" you can use them still. I've never been able to correct "cupping" once you can hear it - try rotating to spin on other side of vehicle may or may not help them wear back closer to normal.

Also: Some dang tires just have a propensity for this no matter what you do??!!
