cold crank issues ..2000 ford 150

I have a 2000 ford 150. I'm having problems cranking it each morning. It takes several tries before it will stay cranked. It will start, then go dead. The odometer works off and on.
please help!

I'm kind of curious about the odometer working on/off, is this happening while the vehicle is running? This could be a link, some vehicles performance involving such problems as odometers/ speedometer/tach not working right would come from a bad speed sensor, most vehicles have one and others have two which are located on the trans, the ones that are equipped two are called the input and the output sensors. Has the check engine light came on at all?
