chevy s-10 loose steering column, wont start

I have a chevy s-10 pickup and recently I've noticed that the steering column is very loose(tilt steering). Last night while on the highway it died and now it wont start. It turns over but just wont start. Any ideas?

Start with the basics first.....plug firing/ fuel pump working/ check engine light...on? I'm not saying the loose column don't have anything to do with it....but the vehicle turning over leads me to think the cause might be elsewhere.
