i have a 92 gmc vandura 2500 5.7L 210,000 miles and my exhaust broke at the forward connection to the cat. inspection revealed it was empty even though it was supposedly replaced about three years ago before i got. it i have a couple questions. one being if it was replaced what could cause it disapear with out leaving chunks in the muffler. i took that off too and stood it on end to shake out potential chunks and came up empty. and the other question is will putting a new one on affect my mileage [i.e.] better or worse mpg and does this engine and vehicle require backpressure to run properly

It sounds like someone decided to gut it out and then tell you it was replaced when it wasn't. Putting a new one on shouldn't effect your mileage but unless you live in a state that inspects emissions, it's probably not necessary. That's an OBD1 system so the cat is not monitored by the PCM.
