car won't go over 40mph

My car is a 2002 Dodge Stratus. I shifted my car in reverse yesterday and it made a noise and stalled. Everything else in the car was working it just would not move. I shifted to park, turned it off and then back on again. It started working. Now when I drive my car it will not go any faster than 40mph. What could be the problem with my vehicle?

how many miles?
sounds like a pressure solenoid is bad in the transmission not telling it to shift to the next gear.
