Ok heres the deal, i swapped the engine out of my camaro, and put a 400 small block in it,after i put it in, i started it, timed it it was running good, went to shut it off, my temp gauge was on(light, bright red), so i replaced the water pump with the one off my 305, and put a brand new thermostat (190 degree). now the car seems to run great until its warmed up, the temp light comes on, just a faint glow. and when i slow down to stop the engine gets really shaky and most times dies! It always starts up though. It does have a holley 600cfm carb, i have all my vaccum lines hooked up or plugged. I can't figure out why it dies??? the guy i bought the engine from said they rebuilt it, but put a used cam in it, and that the valves might need adjusted, could this cause this problem?? how do I adjust the valves? chilton has a page on it in their chevy manual in the front, but i don't have one. can someone please help me!!!! chevyguy78

try this...see if it helps....click here This if for hydraulic lifters... if you have solid lifters...refer to that section ,you'll see where to click to ... This next procedure is done when engine is running..... again for hydraulic lifters..... NOTE: oil will spray up thru the push rod/rocker ...will be messy....unless you can get ahold of some rocker stoppers...things that clip on the rocker to stop the splash of oil....protect oil from getting on the manifolds/exhaust... Readjustment The following procedure, performed with the engine running, should be done only in case readjustment is required. - After engine has been warmed up to operating temperature, remove rocker cover.
- With engine running at idle speed, back off valve rocker arm nut until rocker arm starts to clatter.
- Turn rocker arm nut down slowly until the clatter just stops. This is the zero lash position.
- Turn nut down 1/4 additional turn and pause 10 seconds until engine runs smoothly. Repeat additional 1/4 turns, pausing 10 seconds each time, until nut has been turned down one turn.
let me know it if helped ya JIm

It is a 1978 ? I have never seen one of them without remote / aftermarket oil - coolant - batt temp gauges I always wanted to try taking an old set of "tall" rocker arm covers and cutting the top off to adjust the rockers with no spillage . never did get around to it been so long now but I do wonder if it would be enough to contain the spillage even without the clips. Back to subject *Yes misadjusted valves can cause heating just like a worn timing belt or misaligned timing belt can . Good luck I used to love my z28 those were the days .
