car dieing off Sign In

hey, i have a 1988 honda prelude, and every time i come to a stop and shift gears it seems to try to die on me, but it dosent die it just gets real silent and sort of stalls, then goes back to a idle after a bit. now it runs good at high throttle and sounds all right. it seems to only do this when it comes to a stop. it also does this when i start the car and just leave it idleing for a bit. Now I have been told that it could be a problem with my air intake tube/diaphram or that my air cleaner may be full. but i have also been told that it may have other problems, I think that theres a chance that my throttle cable is screwed up or has a hole. does anyone have any suggestions or insights.

At its age all vacuum hoses electrical connections , the "tube" snorkle have to checked, and all the basic tune-up items including air filter.

What I'm reading into this is the runs fine except at idle. The idle speed is preset and probably uses an electric motor to maintain idle and may be slow or getting bad info because of vacuum leaks etc.

Rule out what is obvious first.

As for the throttle cable - if it was failing the car idle so unless it's sticky that's probably not the problem. When they get frayed inside they usually allow the car to race because it can't return to idle so if it feels free it should be ok.

Re: You prior post for a site for pictures and info on the whole car - I don't know of one but no harm in surfing around - look for clubs for Preludes and see what you find. DanD here has come up with nice diagrams for folks so it's out there somewhere but you may have to pay for it if you want everything on the car.

Good luck,
