my 94 chevrolet cavalier has popped its alternator bearings. the alternator has been replaced by slacking drive belt and removing ,new one installed in reverse order . car will not start battery has been verified will not start when boosted. If i have removed the drive belt with the car in neutral could i have shagged the timing. are there any simple things a simple guy like me could have overlooked.The decomposing alternator was discovered at the end of a 100 kilometer trip could this have burned any thing else. I have no idea what to do the last time i drove the car i parked it in the driveway and turned it off everything was good then i discovered the alternator problem and in trying to fix it i have made the car sleep and not wake up

First of all rest easy, the drive belt for your alternator will have no impact on ignition timeing. I do suspect the battery may be dead from the alternator self destructing. A few simple things to check first are the battery cables, are they clean and tight? Check your ground cable at the transmission where it is attached. How old is the battery? You may want to have it charged and load tested, that will tell you for sure. If none of these help then more in depth diagnostics will be necessary. Good luck.

I just had a Cavalier in my shop the other day with a bad alternator and it burnt the fusible links at the starter. Check if you have 12 volts at the starter (Big wire - not small one)
