can harmonic balancer mimic a bad rod?	Sign In

Has any one ever experienced this before? My brother has a 2000 saturn and last weekend all of the oil some how disapeared from his engine. There was no signs of leaking or being burnt off. So my dad took it to one of the local shops, and they said it sounded like a bad rod. I guess they said it was just cheaper to swap in a new used motor. Well after that while my dad was driving it home he noticed that it wasn't getting louder when he reved it higher, like a bad rod would do. A guy he works with said that the balancer could make the same sound. So my question is has any one ever encountered this problem before or something like it? We are just trying to make sure we don't have to spend more then we have too. Thanks

With the engine off grab the balancer and try to move it around. I have seen them fall apart and they do make noise when they do. This is not a common problem but it's worth checking out. My guess though if the engine had no oil in it and it was driven, there is a good chance of internal damage. Good luck and let us know what you find.

If all oil was lost from any reason you will pay for that. I'm told but never saw it happen that without an harmonic balancer an engine will self destruct but that doesn't explain the oil issue, T
