buying salvage car

Hey Tom, A customer aksed me about a car he was thinking of buying, but the car was totaled. Its been fixed and he ask about getting a title for it. Would the dmv provide any info. ? I told him a salvage title it would be hard to resale,he didn't care. I don't know about this kinda thing. Any suggestions?

http://www.dmv.org/ Unofficial RMV guide. These cars can be a great deal and should be. Best to know what totalled them. Here and probably everywhere you are on your own with them - no recalls or responsibilty from the manu at all. Value plummits as it should and should be forever marked as a salvage vehicle,

Tom, He didn't know what the damage was to the car before the other guy fixed it. He said the man told him the title was lost and the car was salvage. I did try to warn him  the most he could lose is $500. I did tell him to bring me vin# to research. Thanks 4 info.

Beware dave! No title no car at all. Mass issues a "salvage title" or you can't even junk the thing. If bought just to use for parts for another it better have a clean history as to who ownes it or it's a hot car and parts can be traced,

Tom, (IF) the the car did come from a savge yard , theres gotta be some kind of records or receipts ? right? I did run check on vin#. there is 19 records on the vehicle at DMV but like everything else its not free.
Soon as he calls again I'll pass your info along. Thanks again Tom, and the guys

Like way2old said check with your own DMV as to WHAT is needed to legally own the vehicle no matter what the issues are with it. If a salvage yard owns it now that was supposed to be the last place it would carry the original VIN and those may or may not use that VIN but it's marked on that title and that VIN is tagged or a new one is issued.
Here you can't dispose of a car without some serious hoops if you don't have a title on it at least showing you own it. This is part of a newer nationwide crackdown on stolen car problems. I think CARFAX is nationwide for USA anyway and yes $25 bucks or a dealer can offer you info for free but real papers still go with a transaction. Just be sure or it could be a nightmare. If the car is tagged as "salvage" know that the value is tricky after that. That shows right up when you own one and an insurance company totals your car (even after being fixed up) and it won't be the same valuation as a clean titled vehicle so buyers beware,

Tom, Here they don't care, its open season on any junk car. They ask you for a vin# and if its not visible on the car they make one up. No one has any trouble disposing their junk cars , there signs every people wanting to buy them.

hey all...
just wanted to jump in here...
In ILLinois for the longest time we had to have a title to junk a car....lately....within the last couple years i'd say,I have noticed a lot of ads in the paper for towing companies buying junk cars,running or not, title or no title....
the scrap metal places around here are paying big money for the metal..I know a guy at the u-pull it yard that on his spare time picks up junks,no titles ,ok, and tows them to a scrap metal place in indiana and gets twice and three times the money for 'em....no questions asked......I don't know how or why anyone would get involved in this....
they're also paying big/huge money around here for scrap copper and aluminum...copper more so..there breaking into houses and stealing the copper,breaking into new construction...etc.....there are guys making hundreds of dollars a day doing this....incredible......but like anything else...eventually you'll get caught...
i once worked at this one chevy dealer ,which was really a used car superstore that just needed a credible heading like chevy...they sold tons of cars...mainly got out of auctions in jersey....mostly all the cars looked great but when you went to work on them you could tell that they had been KISSED and put back together....i was told then that there are 2 states that you can lose a salvage title and get a good title once the vehicle was repaired....not sure how true that is.

Jim, thats the same here no title no problem. Last summer there was a lady down the road that sold her car as junk $25 and these guys picked up the wrong car she came to my shop asking me if I knew these people. I told her that I know the car crusher they been going to caused they stopped here too. Later I found out the car was there but she was to late. She lost a good car and never found those guys .

This is becoming an interesting thread! Massachusetts has had the distinction twice of being the car theft capitol of the USA - don't know where it stands now. Boston itself and the Western most city (population) Springfield. Cars used to be shipped to Rhode Island and come back with new titles and - hmmm! - lower miles! Problem has been mostly fixed and the New England states seem to cooperate with each other now.
Now most cars are stolen just for their parts and then dumped.
With the price of metal soaring lately we just had a major attack on the scrap piles at auto repair places for the cat-convts which have lots of expensive metals in them!

Yea
here they get $100. for the car if it runs at the junk yard..
they take it to the scrap metal place,get $300. min.
plus they cut off the cat.cons first and get an extra $50.00 plus
then they take off the aluminum wheels ...get extra for that...wow....what a racket ...

You know it...
couple weeks ago..buddy called me up...asked me to run a couple small buckets of metal over to this recycle center that buys the stuff...said one had copper in it,one had aluminum in it...
buckets weren't that big.....he needed money...said he figured he get $45.-$50. bucks total..
I went there...they weighed both...and handed me $140.00 .....HOLY CRAP..said I...
I am definitely thinking about picking up a truck and scrap metal hunting in my spare tire...I do know a guy that takes in 2-3 pickup truck loads a week and gets approx. $500.00 per load.....
told a buddy of mine this..he thought he'd try it...start out small..has a litle ford pickup...ranger.he's driving along-finds a discarded stove or dishwasher...takes it the scrap metal place-got a quick $25.00 for it...on the way out of the yard....ran over something...blew a tire...cost him $45.00 for the tire...lol.......

I had a guy comming by every week to pick up the scrap heads,trans,and engines. Now I know why he had a big smile on his face Soon as I get a trailer I'm gonna be smiling too btw what is steel going at per hundred pounds?
