If a physical key doesn't work why do you think this is an electrical problem?

i guess because the button inside wont pop the hatch part anymore. would that lock on the gate being broke stop the button inside from working. i guess i just always assumed that whole hatch part was electrical. i guess i'll try changing that lock first

Re: blazer hatch not working Sign In

If the electric motor release rods or whatever they use are stuck solid or motor is seized it could prevent the key from turning it manually. I haven't had that happen on anything GM but it absolutely does on some older Fords and no doubt others.

In the Fords it was a lock motor and rod that seized and door couldn't be opened manually or by key without a serious fight as taking panels off with a door closed is a nightmare. If it is like that just undoing the rod should get you back in biz by key. It stinks but they are making more and more stuff with NO KEY to use which is real special with dead batteries. Noticed that Mustangs (may not be all) don't give a key to passenger's door. I hope they saved enough money with that trick to survive while everyone runs out and buys a Toyota or something else.

FYI: In 2007 Toyota became the largest auto maker in the world thanks to stupid moves by GM and others. Shear brilliance!!!!

Re: blazer hatch not working Sign In

i swear this will be the last time i own anything as new as a 97. i've had 86's and 87 chevys only...never had a problem. things were built better...more real parts less plastic...i hate the way they build things

as for toyota..my dad had a 96 camry, both door handles fell off on the outside, and then on the inside and neither front window would roll down... one handle broke after i had got out to jiggle the battery wire in the middle of the road..popped off in my hand. the bodies on them are crap, plastic crap...but yeah, the motors and stuff are great, our's went just over 400,000 miles before an oil leak and a stripped out bolt caused it to be parked for good.
thanks for the info...i'll just start taking panels off and stuff til i find the problem. almost ready to junk it

I was out on a camp job this spring and my rear hatch button on the dash stopped working as well. My shop manual was useless in this matter and I looked around on the web. If you pry the tail gate panel from the inside, you get your hand in and finger in the whole, center of the tail gate and about 4-5 inches from the top of the finising panel. Move the latch toward the driver's side and the glass window will open. You can then open the tail gate. Afterward, the push button seemed to work untill this week.
It will work using my remote control rear hatch button but not the inside button on the dash ! I am puzzled now.
It started when my dome light wouldn't go off. I removed the ceiling console to install a switch on the ceiling light but when I screwed the console back up, one screw went through the orange and black wires coming from passenger door. I fixed the wires and now, no more power to the dome light AND rear hatch button on dash won't do it's job anymore. Using a key in the tail gate door lock won't do anything as it is connected via a harness, i.e. an electrical componant.
Does anybody know if there is a fuse for the rear hatch or door switches hidden anywhere ?

Found the problem. The grounded orange and black wires at the ceiling console caused fuse #2 (courtesy fuse) to blow. Replaced it and both horn and rear hatch dash swith started to work again.
