Black out exhaust is usually soot from unburned gas. It's running rich, way too rich and this will cause other problems if not corrected. Mr. way2old is not here with his crystal ball so can you tell us what type of vehicle this is?

Corvette: All the more reason to chase this down and fix that. The converters and O2 sensors may screw up because of this and I bet the converters are real expensive on a Corvette.

If the car is a babied just around town now and then use car and it does that just once or twice it might be forgiven and may clear up with a good run.

Fuel delivery is adjusted by a few things. Engine temp, air temp, load on the engine and throttle position. These are all controlled by the car's computer which will make the mixture adjustment in split seconds for maximum performance and least waste of fuel.

A check engine light may be on or may have a code stored in it now. They aren't perfect at locating a problem but can lead to the right area. You must have a known good air filter and general tune-up items in good shape.

If there have been any alterations for performance I would suspect problems there first. A history of what has been done to this car over the years will help. How many miles and what type of use did it get.

Does it run well in general? Is this problem new? Any recent work? These things will help in finding the problem,
