battery Sign In

got 1986 chev camper van
350 engine automatic
all the gauges quit working [fuel oil etc.] all the lights wont work headlights signal etc.it starts and runs altnater sending out current
but i put a test light on negative post on battery and touh the other end on the body and it has power the whole van is energized some one help

Unless the body is shorted or the polarity is reversed then you should not have an issue with the body being powered. I would isolate the wiring, start with the battery and follow every inch of wiring away from the battery until you locate the source. Generally if the body was shorted to power a fire would ensue as the battery is grounded to both the chassis and the engine, and from what you are saying is the body is shorted to power.
Take a fluke meter and go from the battery ground terminal or post, and using DC volts see what voltage drop from ground to chassis is. it should read 0.00 volts or less than half a volt, 0.5 If however the voltage reads more than a volt or 1.0V + then it is shorted to power.
Using a test lamp can show that there is voltage but not the amount of voltage, een a slight amount may mean somewhere you are losing ground, or in other words your chassis is not proerply grounded to the engine or vice versa, check all your body grounds and see if they are corroded or clean and tight.
Let me know what you find and I will try to help you diagnose this issue in whatever way I can.


The following procedure tests for a short to voltage in a circuit.
  1. Set the rotary dial of the DMM to the V (DC) position.
  2. Connect the positive lead of the DMM to one end of the circuit to be tested.
  3. Connect the negative lead of the DMM to a good ground.
  4. Turn ON the ignition and operate all accessories.
  5. If the voltage measured is greater than 1 volt, there is a short to voltage in the circuit.

The following procedure determines the difference in voltage potential between 2 points. Voltage Drop
  1. Set the rotary dial of the DMM to the V (DC) position.
  2. Connect the positive lead of the DMM to one point of the circuit to be tested.
  3. Connect the negative lead of the DMM to the other point of the circuit.
  4. Operate the circuit.
  5. The DMM displays the difference in voltage between the 2 points.
