Hello - I have an '02 Intrepid SE, exc. cond., 40k miles, 2.7 cid, NEVER a problem. Am (was) considering selling it to a friend to buy '02 - '04 Intrepid R/T or Charger. Local mechanic informs my friend, the potential buyer, that Intrepids in general and the 2.7 in particular are troublesome and should be avoided - so there goes the sale. I've never heard anything about this, comparing them to the Ford Taurus, etc. Looked up TSB's and there are very few / none of any significance and only one minor recall. Any comments or opinions?

The first suggestiion is to avoid selling cars to friends. No matter what seems to happen in the future it will seem like it's your fault.
The other issue is what is the real story with any car? There are a million opinions on what is good and what is not and some is just luck. The most important thing by far with a used car is how it was driven and cared for. Most cars will behave for about the 3-4 years or 50,000 miles when you notice lots of service items be tended to as preventive maintenance. Most folks just ignore that and keep on going and things happen that could have been avoided.
I've owned a couple of known less than good reputation cars and they worked out fine and vs versa.
There are very few absolutely bad cars out there,

Hi Tom, thanks for your reply. Yes, I agree that how a car is driven and maintained is far more important than anything else. One detail I left out of my original post is that this 'friend' who was interested in my car is someone I live with, so the idea was to keep the car 'in the family.' It's a known quantity and has been very reliable, etc., so why get rid of it?! My problem is with the local mechanic who seems very opinionated...Ok, fine, but he shouldn't interfere with the internal affairs of a family or friendship and probably shouldn't be bad-mounting cars he doesn't like, to the people who own them!! Thanks again for your input.

If you can reach a level headed understanding with this person that you have cared for the car and the things that will be needed as all cars like, tires, brakes, a timing belt at some point, and perhaps a surprise I would go for it. I don't know of this car to be so bad that I would take an popular example (like a Toyota Corolla) with an unknown history over the used car with a history that is good.
The mechanic who didn't like this car may have had a run of bad luck or folks who beat on the cars and problems were difficult or expensive because of that. They/we don't see the ones that get cared for so much which is why we recommend caring for your car as the most cost effective way to stay in transportation,
