They usually don't move too much unless something else is causing it. Things like a bad spot in the belt or an A/C compressor that is pulsing from compression are common caused of that. Sometimes the tensioner is just too weak also. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

At idle with a steady load not much maybe a 1/4 inch each direction . Turn on the a/c and it will react to the load . Turn the steering and the p/s pump loads. The important thing is that it is within wear limits. I don't know what model car you have , so the best I can do is a generic picture. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

thanks for your reply on the tensioner question. i have never had a tensioner move that much that i can remember, it was extremely easy to replace the bel which i did about two weeks ago. Over the weekend i purchased a new tensioner and replaced the old one. As it stand I only get an 1/8 in deflection at idle rpm, once the a/c goes on its more like 5/16 to 3/8 and is slightly irrattic. the vehicle is a 96 chevy blazer 4x4 4.3 v6. its possiable the a/c compressors the problem? can that be fixed without replacing the whole compressor?
