95 mercury mystique, 2.5L, A/C 116,000miles.
who in their right mind would put an alternator on the bottom of an engine? Can someone please tell me how to solve this riddle of the ages. I can't even fit my hand thru the small gaps provide by the exhaust pipe and stuff.

Hey, these engineers get paid big bucks to make it difficult. Let's see how we can make the mechanic's life a nightmare!
1. Remove negative battery cable from battery.
2. Remove serpentine drive belt.
3. Raise vehicle, remove RF wheel.
4. Remove R. tie rod from steering knuckle.
5. Remove exhaust 'Y' pipe.
6. Disconnect wiring from alternator, remove alternator brace.
7. Disconnect lower ball joint from control arm, remove half shaft.
8. Remove alternator mounting bolts.
And then, it will give you just enough room to rotate the alternator and wriggle it out, according to the procedure.
Those engineers must have stayed up late on this one.
If you haven't lit a bomb under the vehicle by this point, put everything back in reverse order using a new circlip on the axle shaft. Tighten the axle nut to 246 ft. lbs. Refil the trans., as you lost some fluid when the axle was pulled. Then, have a couple of beers on us.WinkUnsure

Not Quite. They put the car together & disassemble few times. They don't work on cars that are actually on the road for sometime. They don't know or feel the pain mechanics had to endure to remove all these rusted joints.

Mechanic has to heat up bolts & try to exert preassue in unusual position to remove that 10+ yrs old nut&bolt, which never moved since leaving the factory.
