Changing and ECU is like brain surgery, there are a lot of factors and plug in that need to be assessed and installed for you car to go. way2old Veteran / Moderator Oct 3, 2007, 4:56 PM Post #3 of 3 (1227 views) Re: how to changew ECU Sign In You can change the ECM if you follow a few simple steps. First, disconnect the battery, both cables. Then tie both cables together for about 5 minutes. Then separate the cables. Disconnect the wiring to the ECM. Remove ECm. You may need to take both of them to a place that can "flash" (re-program) the new computer and there is a chip called a PROM in the old one that may need to be installed in the new one. After that is done you can return to your car and install. Be careful that the cables do not touch the battery terminals. Install the ECM in the mounting area, install wiring. Hook up battery. Positive first, negative laqst. You should be OK.
