Service Engine Soon Light Turns Off Quickly? Sign In

The "Service Engine Soon" turned on in my 99 Buick Century. I went to my usual mechanic and he checked the system with the code reader and told me it was the same problem I had 2 years ago--the gas cap was loose. He suggested I buy a new one. He then cleared the code and the light was not on anymore.

I bought a new gas cap from the dealership and it fit fine. Now when I start my car, the SES light will turn off immediately, while all the other lights stay on a few seconds before turning off. If I turn the car on without starting it, all the lights come on and while the other lights will turn off after a few seconds, the SES light stays on. Is this all normal?

The last time this happened, the mechanic just took the gas cap off and replaced it again and the light turned off; I don't remember if he cleared the code or not.

I also posted this question in the "Engine Fault Codes" forum; I wasn't sure where to post, so I posted both there and here.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks all.

That is normal.

Don't worry about that light going off too soon. It's when it comes on you have to worry. It's not supposed to go out if the car isn't running.
