Great Post Hammer Time I would just like to add one more thing to you're quotes below. IF YOUR STARTER CRANKS THE ENGINE BUT IT WILL NOT START These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause. You also have to confirm that there an excessive exhaust back pressure issue. (Example a failed cat that's completely blockin the exhaust)

That not only won't prevent the car from starting but would also show up in the compression test. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

(Quote) That not only won't prevent the car from starting but would also show up in the compression test. You're exactly right again Hammer. That's why I brought it up in the first place. A Saturday morning warrior, or someone who's new to auto repair and armed with a compression tester could mistake the compression readings for a ring issue rather than a back pressure issue.

That's not the point of that test. That is done to isolate the issues with spark, injector pulse, fuel pressure and compression. All the findings still have to be analyzed correctly to determine what really may be wrong with it. That just produces the info we need to start making a conclusion. Poor compression could be a lot more things that just those two. A timing belt is usually much higher on the suspect list for bad compression.
