98 Ranger won't start, starter just clicks Sign In

1998 Ford ranger, 3.0 L, 98,000 km

starter just clicks and won't turn over. I changed the starter believing that was the issue. But still just clicks.

You need to start with testing the battery. Once you know you have a strong battery, remove all the cables and wire brush the ends and the terminals they go to. Make sure you get the ones at the solenoid and the starter.

Agree with Hammer. Think you started on the wrong end. A bad starter usually makes just one click when it is bad. Weak battery or bad connections gives a series of clicks.Good luck

I did check the battery before I put in the starter and the terminals looked to be good. I just took the dremmel outside and shined up the posts and cables nicelly, and I cleaned the connections on the starter/ wires when I put it in.

The look of the cables means nothing at all. These Fords have a history of doing this. The cables have to be removed before brushing, all of them.

I of course did remove the cables and they are well cleaned. I am no expert but I don't think it's a battery issue. I just put the charger back on it to make sure and it's showing full. For Sh!ts and giggles I used the boost mode on the charger and it still just clicks away.

Have you tried jumping the solenoid at the starter?

The only other explanation is a seized engine. Try to put a big ratchet on the crank bolt and see if you can turn it by hand.

I will try jumping the solenoid, didn't think of that. I had thought maybe seized engine but I havn't ever seen an engine light the oil is good and it's only a too and from work vehicle and never gets hot enough. I wiill give it another shot hopefully the solenoid is toasted....

Re: 98 Ranger won't start, starter just clicks Sign In

What do you mean by "bypassed"?

What you need to do is remove the small wire at the "S" terminal and use a jumper wire to jump power to the terminal. If that works, then your problem is elsewhere in the circuit like the ignition switch or neutral starter switch. If it's a stick, check the clutch switch.

I jumped on the power control module, sorry probably bad terminology. It started, is it a fuse issue or... I took a look at fuse #5 and it looks good as well as fuse #24 in the interior fuse pannel. Any ideas?

Re: 98 Ranger won't start, starter just clicks Sign In

now I am just trying to figure this out I don't exactly understand what I am "bypassing" by putting power on the other terminal of the battery junction box. I would assume if it starts by doing this that, the ignition switch must be working and the starter is new and obviously wasnt the problem in the first place. is there a way to bypass the neutral starter switch to figure out if it's the problem? I read that by holding the shifter hard and back in the park or neutral position it can sometimes fix it but that didn't seem to work.

Nobody said anything about a battery junction box. Go to the solenoid, remove the small wire and apply power to the small terminal. If the starter cranks, the the starter, battery cables and solenoids are all good and you have to start looking at the rest of the circuit that triggers these items.
