92 Lumina Trouble

My son has a 92 Chevy Lumina Euro with a 3.1 V6 auto trans. When cold the engine will start with ease, however after driving the car for a few minutes it becomes difficult to start, involving excessive cranking and having to hold the pedal down which shouldn't be necessary for a fuel-injected engine, it also has an inconsistent idle when sitting at a stop, any idea.

The first thing that comes to mind here is the fuel pressure regulator. Sounds as if it could be leaking; which will cause inconsistent idle, hard start when warm, and lousy fuel mileage. The regulator is located on top of the engine on one end of the fuel "rail". the fuel rail is the tube that the injectors are attached to. The regulator looks like a small round "pod" (for lack of a better word) which has a vacuum hose attached to it. to check for leakage; start the engine and run for just thirty seconds or so then shut down. Pull the vacuum hose off of the regulator and check the end you just pulled off for any dampness. it should be dry - absolutely dry. If it is at all wet it means the regulator is leaking past it's diaphragm and needs replaced. Replacing this part can be DANGEROUS if you are a novice as fuel leaks can occur if parts/screws/bolts are not tightened properly. USE CAUTION and check and RECHECK if doing it yourself. Instructions as well as the replacement part are available at any parts store.
