Worked great one day, not at all the next Sign In

I have a '96 Ford Taurus LX, with about 150,000 miles on it. I don't know the engine size, unfortunately, and don't know where to find that. My knowledge of cars is sadly limited. Hence why I'm posting here, I guess.

I drove my car probably 5 or 6 times a week up until recently, and then one day, it just would not start.

Things I tried:
- Putting gas in (the gauge was slightly above empty)
- Putting oil in
- Jumping the battery
- Kicking and punching it

What it did when I tried to start it was just turn over like it was out of gas, and that's it. But now, it doesn't even turn over when I try.

The lights and radio and whatnot still work, the engine just won't start.

As for what happened prior to this incident, the only thing I can think of is that it died while I was stuck in traffic on the freeway going about 15 mph. So I pulled over to the shoulder and just turned it on again. This was about two weeks before it just stopped completely.

My dad suggested maybe replacing the battery, but before I put money into that I thought I would try here. If any additional info is needed, please let me know.

When you tried to jump start the car, what happened? Have you tried to put the car in neutral and try to start it? Battery is a possibility. There is a known problem with the transmission range/neutral safety switch. Let us know what the results are from these. If the car does not turn over at all, possibly battery or tr sensor or maybe even the starter is going.

When I tried to jump it, it would just turn over and not start until I let go. I haven't put it in neutral, no, but I'm not sure if it would work very well since it won't do anything when I turn the key now.

From the possible problems you listed, are any of them very expensive to repair?

Can you hear the fuel pump running when you turn the ignition to the "on" position? It should hum for a couple of seconds and then quit.

Nope, there's no sound there, either.

And a new discovery that might help with figuring this out: none of the inside lights work anymore, except for the indicator lights (like the gas, battery, oil, etc.) which are really dim, and all the external lights (headlights, break lights, etc.) are super dim as well.

You'll really need to begin with a known good, charged battery or a known good jump left on. Not all jumps work so well and can need a waiting time or better cables if jumping a real lousy battery.

Get a 12v (automatic shut off helps) battery charger. Almost anyone with a car should own one.

If you are up to it take that battery out and get it tested, clean up the cable connections. If it's older - like 4 years is old for a car battery just get a new one, proper for the car. Ask how old the new one is! Ya - it might be pushing a year old so ask - if they don't know go elsewhere. Many are marked with plain month and day on them when they were made. Others, simple codes like B-8 might be out there now for February, 2008 batteries or some disguised codes.

Without knowing the battery is good there's little point in testing much else for now,

T
