Wiper Problem Sign In

Hi everyone,
Two days ago we received a cold front which brough rain and the freezing temps. The next morning the windsheild was frozen. I started the car and didnt notice the wipers were still on a slow setting while car heated up. In a nutshell only the driver side wiper works. The passenger side wiper does not seem to work. If you bend the wipers back and turn the wipers on the motor seems to work on both sides. Do you think i just need to replace the arm? Any thoughts is appreciated as i am worried about the next storm.

Re: Wiper Problem Sign In

the stress of the wiper being frozen to the windshield and the torque of the turning motor probably just popped off the retaining clip attaching the linkage together.

your going to have to get access to the linkage through the cowl to reattach it.

Re: Wiper Problem Sign In

Just curious and to add: Does this wiper arm have a nut right where it pivots? If so it may have stripped out right there and hopefully the arm was the weak link and not more than just it. Some of the type I'm thinking of were softer alum at that arm than the part that turns it. Tightening may help or you might find wiper off the window if the type I'm thinking of??

The arm has a plastic piece the pops out and underneath it is a bolt that appears to keep it in place. I did notice that a little loose. Do you think tighting it will actually help? What do you mean by cowl as I a beginner when it comes to terminology? Thanks for your replies!

Re: Wiper Problem Sign In

Ok: Here's a feeble attempt at pics of what I think you have or similar. See in the car that's apart that wipers have hold-down nuts right at the base - like you mentioned was loose now on yours. Tightening that alone would help but may NOT keep wiper in proper position. The spindle that turns the arm like in next pic is "splined" and those may have rounded out matching splines in the wiper arm itself such that it will no longer hold strong or stay in position - IF IT'S STRIPPED.

If you try to tighten that just make sure it's in the "home" position like the one that works properly now. If tightened in just any position it could "park" somewhere it can't go if you follow me. Some are indexed such that they only go on one spot - doesn't sound like this one though.

I suggest removing it to take a look. If all fails and this arm can damage the car then take it off or leave it in upright position out of harms way.

Tip: When expecting weather with snow or ice - leave the wipers pointing UP and off windshield till glass is cleared and warmed up to work with wipers again. Isn't Winter a blast?

FYI: 'Cowl' is just a name for the area at base of wipers where air louvers are also....

That's the base part of the car not the more easily replacable arm if needed. Hope this is still good as it's harder to replace that part. Shown with wiper arm off but nut back on in this pic.
