I have a front wheel drive neon and i'm going to be buying a set of Firestone WinterForce tires to be mounted on the front wheels. I was planning on leaving the back tires with what i currently have on them which is all season tires. Then someone told me that it would affect handling capabilities of the car if I have winter tires mounted in the front and all seasons mounted in the rear.
Is this actually an issue or is this just a way for the tire companies to make more money?

In my opinion, all four tires should be replace at the same time, regardless of them being summer, all-season or snows. Leaving a pair of half worn or your summer tires on the rear will change the way the car handles during braking and cornering.
The backs of most front wheel drives are so light, in comparison to front that even with all tires being the same; they still have a tendency of sliding or kicking out to the side during cornering and braking.
Yes traction control and ABS braking has helped a lot with this issue but they can only do so much before they shut themselves off.
Look at it this way; leaving a tire with less traction on any axle is like an athlete only putting on, one spiked shoe.
