Will a new ignition coil result in needing a new cat? Sign In

2001 Ford Focus, 1.6
40,000

My car was juddering and i smelt burning when i stopped. I took it to a garage and paid for a diagnostic check which resulted in needing a new ignition coil and 4 x spark plugs. The mechanic said that in the future there was now a good chance I would need a new catalytic converter as a result of this. Why is this the case and at approx £300 a snip is there no way this can be corrected?
Many thanks

With any type of engine misfire, it's always hard on the cat due to the fact of rich fuel mixture & raw gas going thru it. The longer its driven that way increases the chances of doing harm to the cat.

From your post it sounds like you took care of the problem in a timely matter and seeing the mileage I think the odds would be very low that you did too much harm to your cat. The tech was just covering himself due to the presence of a misfire condition. This way if there is any problems with your converter down the road, you aren't going to come back and blame him for the problem..........

Right, that makes more sense. I didn't fully understand the situation and the mechanic mentioned it and then seemed dismissive which worried me some what! You explanation covers the issue perfectly though, so many thanks for replying. I noticed it first thing this morning and it was in the garage after 10miles so fingers crossed eh. Thanks again

Well sounds like you take care of problems right away and thats a good thing, keeps things from getting more expensive later on down the road.

You should be good and have no reason to worry.........

Now if you'd be driving it for a few month......................That would be a different post..........Wink
