This Van has not been run in 6 months. My friend came to town and started it. He did not know it had very little gas in it. It ran fine and then ran out of gas. it will not start, I have not seen it but at lunch I will be going over there to trouble shoot it. I am thinking he clogged the fuel filter. Can anybody tell me were it is located to save me some time. And how difficult is it to remove. Thanks

Near all are on the frame rail and use flare nuts on filter and lines to seal in. They can be nasty to get out and bust lines up and there are kit's to fix that if it happens. You need real "flare nut" wrenches or will just round them off. Not a nice job if rust is involved yet seems so simple, T

In tank fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank. When you run a car out of gas, it pumps a lot of air through the pump which overheats it and causes some severe wear and many times, failure when they cool off. You will need to use a fuel pressure gauge to verify this ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks Tom, you just confermed everything I already knew. I guess i was hoping someone would tell me "Oh its right on the top of the engine and all you need is some plyers". Ha Ha God i wish. I changed the same thing on my 89 bronco.

Thanks Hammer, Like I said this is my friend not my wife. LOL!!! I will not be dropping his tank and replacing no fuel pump. I might attempt to change the filter and if it don't run I will let him use my phone for a tow truck. LOL

Hammer just brought to light that you should be checking for fuel pressure first and easier. If no fuel get up there then you find out why. Empty tanks or even running low of fuel is a real pump killer as Hammer said. Put PB penetrating oil all over the flare nuts and lines now! Rustproof all the lines and flare nut for later it will be a cake walk. If this is lack of fuel it should repond to starting fluid down throttle body as a test would tell you now if fuel is the issue or not, T

The filter is a high flow "pass though". It will not prevent it from starting. Try rapping on the bottom of the tank with a block of wood or mallet while someone else is trying to start it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

When the pump overheats it just gets stuck and the electrical can't overcome it. Giving it a jar while the power is applied frees up the motor ad lets it run. Believe me, it works.

Ok I am back. I put some starter fluid in the TB and it cranked right up for a second. Since he ran out of gas and tried starting it over and over with an empty tank I am pretty sure he over heated his fuel pump. I banged all over the tank while he was trying to start it (not knowing where the fuel pump is located in the tank) but still could not get it to start. Any other ideas? Thanks Paul

Verify power at ground going to the pump and if that is good, replace the pump.
