What to look for first 95 Merc Grand Marquis Sign In

I have a 95 Merc Grand Marquis, 4.6 V8 with 82,000 miles, in the 30 MPH range B4 it would shift down it develops what seems like a miss, when you give it more power you can accelerate right out of it. I've changed plugs and found a few wide gaps with one real wide but the new ones didn't help. what to look at first: coils, wires, injectors, fuel filter, or maybe transmission? Hope I explained this clearly

i would have changed the wires with the plugs, but continue your path down the general tune up, all filters fluid changes. then take it from there

no check engine lights???

Of course, I'd look at secondary, first. i.e. wires. You can check them with an ohmeter. Also, a light spray of water in a darkened area might show an arc to ground. Or, is this coil over type? Hmmmm. Can't remember.

If the plug wires do not fix it (they probably will)---------Does it feel like a miss, or a rumbling noise? If it is more of a rumble, that is torque converter shudder. Cheap fix for it is to add a bottle of anti-shudder additive. It works if the shudder is the problem.

Big John:

To add to the good suggestions - how did all the plugs compare with each other? They tell a tale on their own by color and the odd gaps suggests they weren't right to begin with or suffered way too long with a problem.

This should have regular but expensive plug wires with long insulated ends down to the plugs that car arc inside unseen causing misfire - you might even hear it!

If no CEL yet try some injector cleaner too in fuel and no harm in a good professional injector cleaning.

I'm a bit surprised new plugs didn't show improvement if old ones were so bad??

Re: What to look for first 95 Merc Grand Marquis Sign In

Well it's fixed! I had the local NAPA auto parts store order me a tube of Dr. Tranny's Shudder Fixx for six dollars and change, squeezed it into the dip stick tube and took a drive to mix it in. After 5 miles or so I can truly say no more shudder! how long the fix will work I don't know but it's like a miracle.

I would also like to know if Ford has made any recommendations to use one of the newer versions of ATF than the originally specified Mercon, maybe Mercon V ?

Ford does not recommend changing fluids. Hoewver they do approve of going up in grades. Such ad from Mercon > II >III > IV > V. So as long as you are going from older fluids to newer, things will be OK. However, going from Mercon V to an oloder fluid is not recommend.
