HEY BOYS JUST A QUESTION, MY F-250 (88,000 MI) WENT FROM 11.7 MPG TO 9.8 MPG WHEN I MOVED FROM TUCSON TO SEATTLE. IS IT JUST THESE DANG HILLS? EVEN WHEN I DROVE UP HERE FULLY LOADED I NEVER DROPPED BELOW 10.5 MPG EVEN IN THE PASSES OR UP THE GRAPEVINE. I CHANGED MY PLUGS,FUEL, AND AIR FILTER AND I'M RELIGEOUS ABOUT OIL CHANGES. ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS?
THANKS,
P.S. the camaro still needs your helpSly

Might be normal! What if any % alcohol is used now and WAS used where you bought fuel in Tucson? Ethanol ruins fuel economy or does around me anyway. I have to hunt for non ethanol 10% fuel only out of state from here! I can count on losing about 10% and it can't just be the luck of tailwinds all the time!

I don't know state by state what the rules are with ethanol. In MA they state up to 10% right at the pumps. I do go way the hell up into Cow Hampshire (NH - just a joke) a few times a year and was told and saw no ethanol warnings in certain out of the way gas stations and asked about that. They are allowed to sell real gasoline (any grade) if so many miles away from a city of "X" population as apparently the ethanol does help with pollution/emissions.

I watch my MPGs like a hawk and can do the round trip without fuel OR when I've filled up at the last place with real gas it's always - repeat ALWAYS better for that tankful or partial tankful.

Not sure of the gov't part of it but ethanol is subsidized like a buck a gallon (alone/pure) otherwise right now it would cost more! It's a game. If this adds up just as the percentages I'm guessing then basically you are getting a gallon but it's only going 90% as far so it's a rip off! There are tons of additives in gasoline that aren't fossile fuel already and flicking MA makes or perhaps quit it them put the toxic MBTE (forget what the letters mean at the moment) for Winter use to reduce emissions and the dang stuff ruins ground water but somehow makes fuel burn cleaner when cold??

One of our guys here lives in Vancouver, WA (Loren Champlain, Sr,) look for his posts and hit him if he doesn't jump in here as Vancouver is real close to Oregon which may have different rules and he might know what's what around there or for the state as a whole.

There are a lot of factors and the ethanol is just one. Winter mixes may alter MPGs and we all know colder temps are simply going to use more than moderate temps. Then throw in steady lenghs of your drive and the mountain driving can and will matter too.

Joke - I keep telling folks to plan their trips such that they go downhill both ways and some actually think about itCrazy

Ask around locally too. I'd love to hear of other's observations too on this,

T

V10; Tom's right about the ethanol, here in WA and OR. I think, however, it is the season (ambient temp) and the ethanol combined that hurt our fuel economy in this beautiful state. I know that my truck gets worse mileage during the hard cold spells, and noticably better once it gets hot, you know, about 60F. LOL. Another thing is tire pressures. In cold weather, they will drop, so keep a close eye on that as it will affect the mileage. Also, make sure the engine is running hot enough (thermostat).
