Help....
I have a situation where when I get it hot, my 1992 4wd Aerostar, when cresting a hill upon taking my foor off the gas, the most awful noise happens.
and it jerks the wheel to one side (usually toward passenger side (where I think I hear it from) but sometimes to the left). I had my spider gears rebuilt in the differential....no better. Transmission man has no idea what it is.
I have new half shafts, and a new wheel hub on the passenger side (it froze on me in traffic!!!) . I have no trust for the man who did the shafts and hub...
What could this be? Transfercase? Hub? Inner CV? Ball Joint? I am running out of patience and money.
Please help if you have an idea.....
Thanks, Ron Cloud Asheville, NC

Just some thoughts: Some half shafts are bad as most are rebuilt and there seems to be a failure rate. They usually act up while steering and under load but anything is possible. If the problem was the same before and after, one wouldn't think they were it.

Ball joints should be known good but don't usually cause many symptoms.

The Hub if the type with the bearing built into it could cause symptoms and could be checked for noise and play with veh off, jacked up and spin suspect by hand may find something. You'll need to be in neutral to spin wheel, and back in park with other wheel on ground rock it back and forth and all ways for play and noise.

I'm kind of lost with this one. Keep at it. You've had a lot of stuff done, so at least make sure the lug nuts are tight! Good luck, Wish I could see this one, perhaps another shop may be your best bet,

Thanks for the advice....

I forgot to mention that I can tap the breaks (unless it is happening really bad) and it seems to reseat whatever is out of line....noise stops and steering feels normal again until down the next hill.

How does the shaft recieve energy through the differential? At which point does the transfercase come into play? I feel like when the hub locked up in traffic (passengerside) perhaps some energy transfered somewhere it should not have (ie back into transfercase? and perhaps tore a tooth off a grear.
What would be a sign of a bad transfer case (full time AWD)?

Thanks,
RC

Just for a test - remove fuse for ABS - that may be a problem here. If problem goes away then that's what needs tending to. Do this in a a safe place. Be safe with this,

OOOOOH, Just read the AWD. Sorry that I have to admit near NO experience with all wheel drive. If real fancy they sense each wheel's rotation and control power to a spinning wheel kind of the reverse of anti-lock brakes. The noise had me thinking of some more common troubles.

You did mention that the brakes can change the behavior so they need to known good, not just wear but freely working calipers could be NOT so free and all kinds of sysmptoms can happen - intermittently, and in conjuction with AWD there could be a lot of computer controlled confusion.

I hope someone here can really target your problem who really knows your exact system. Otherwise you probably need a transmission specialty shop. I hate the agony of defeat but that's the best I can do for this, Good luck,
